How to Choose a 2 Inch, 3 Inch or 4 Inch Water Pump

The short answer

  • Choose on head and flow together. The catalogue states one maximum head and one maximum flow per model, and they do not occur at the same time.
  • Connection size is a hose decision, not a performance decision. It tells you what pipe fits, not what the pump will do.
  • Suction lift is part of the total. Every metre of vertical lift on the suction side reduces what is left at the outlet.
  • If the run is long or the lift is high, move up one size rather than accepting a pump that only just meets the duty.

Maximum flow and maximum head are separate catalogue figures and are not simultaneous. Ask for the test curve for the duty point you need.

How to choose

  1. Work out the total head

Vertical lift from water level to outlet, plus the length of horizontal run converted to equivalent head, plus the outlet pressure you need. That total, not the lift alone, is what the pump has to meet.

  2. Add the suction side

The catalogue suction lift is a maximum, measured under good conditions. A dirty strainer, a long suction hose or a high altitude all reduce it.

  3. Decide the flow you actually need

Irrigation, tank filling and drainage each have a different answer. State litres per hour or cubic metres per hour, and how many hours a day the pump runs.

  4. Match the hose to the connection

A 2 inch pump throttled down to a 1 inch hose loses most of its advantage. Undersized hose is the most common reason a correctly sized pump disappoints.

  5. Check weight and how it moves

From 26 kg to 90 kg across the range. Above the weight one person carries, a frame or trolley has to be part of the order.

Suited to

  • Irrigation from a canal, well or tank with a known lift and run.
  • Drainage, transfer and site water supply.
  • Clean or lightly dirty water.

Not the right choice when

  • Booster duty on a pressurised mains supply — these are transfer pumps, not booster sets.
  • Abrasive solids or chemicals, which shorten seal and impeller life.
  • Duty points close to the maximum head and maximum flow at the same time.

How this is checked before it ships

Published per model, not per family

Every model page carries the full catalogue row: connections, head, suction lift, flow, engine, packing size and container quantity. Nothing is quoted at family level and applied to all models.

Loading

Container quantities are stated per model — 330 units per 20 ft for the 2 inch and 3 inch sets, 120 for the 6 inch — so a mixed order can be planned against one container.

More on the production sequence and the documents issued with an order: certifications, testing and quality control.

How the figures were checked
Figures cross-checked against the printed catalogue row for each model. Third-party engine figures are taken from the maker’s published data and labelled in the text.
