How to Choose a 5.5 HP Gasoline Engine for OEM Equipment

The short answer

  • Fix the mechanical interface before the price: shaft, keyway, bolt pattern, base height and shaft height above the base.
  • 5.5 HP is a class, not a guarantee. Our FSH160 is 163 cc, listed at 5.5 HP / 3.1 kW and 16 kg — the catalogue prints both figures, so confirm the rating basis before comparing it with another maker.
  • Decide recoil or electric start at the design stage. Electric start adds a battery, charging coil and switch, which changes the frame and the wiring loom.
  • State the duty cycle. Continuous running at the rated figure shortens engine life; a larger engine running below its rating is usually the cheaper answer over a season.

Common specification applies across the engine range. Shaft and mounting dimensions are confirmed per order, because they follow the customer’s drawing.

How to choose

  1. Draw the interface, not the engine

Put the shaft and mounting dimensions on your own drawing and send it. A supplier who builds to drawing will match it; one who only quotes a model number will not.

  2. Decide the starting system

Recoil only is simplest and lightest. Electric start adds battery, coil and switch, and it is worth it where the end user is not a trained operator.

  3. Fix the fuel tank and air cleaner orientation

These decide the machine envelope and the service access. Both can be specified, and both are expensive to change after tooling.

  4. State the duty cycle and ambient conditions

Hours per day, load as a share of rated output, dust, altitude and temperature. Air-cooled engines lose capacity at altitude and in high ambient temperature.

  5. Agree what is inspected and what ships with each lot

Pre-shipment test records, packing method and carton marking should be agreed in writing before the first batch, not after it.

Suited to

  • Equipment that needs a light, air-cooled power unit in the 5.5 HP class.
  • OEM builds where the interface can be specified on a drawing.
  • Markets where petrol is the available fuel.

Not the right choice when

  • Continuous heavy-duty duty at the rated figure, where a larger engine or a diesel unit is the better answer.
  • Enclosed installations without airflow — air cooling needs unobstructed air around the cylinder and head.

How this is checked before it ships

Built to drawing, sample or specification

Customisation runs to your drawing and dimensional requirements, to a supplied sample, or to a specification developed jointly, including paint colour, decals and component materials.

What is checked before packing

Incoming components are inspected and recorded before assembly, each product family has a defined inspection method, and every unit is tested before it is packed.
